Is there a such thing as having too many pillows?

I was in Texas visiting my Mom recently and found her sorting through bins upon bins of throw pillows.  She changes pillows and towels with the seasons (although I could argue the frequency of that statement), and we found ourselves playing in them all.

Personally, I don’t ever think one can have too many pillows (options are good), but I do suggest a less is more approach to styling them as the “seasons change” (ahem, Mom).  Here are a few of the tips I follow when helping clients - family or friends:

 Following the “Rule of 3s”

  • Odd numbers are good.  For throw pillows, 3 is the magic number.

  • 1 Pattern (e.g., floral, geometric, or tribal) to anchor the look

  • 1 Solid that complements the pattern (see above)

  • 1 textured or small-scale print (like a stripe, dot, or linen weave) to add dimension.

The shapes and sizes, as well as the placement of the solid and pattern can be mixed and matched, but typically the texture takes front and center.  This tip will help you create visual interest without looking too bold or chaotic.

Oh, and don't take a chop to the pillow. Ouch!  A gentle fluff to the tops and sides will do.
