Tablescape Tips this Autumn

Tablescape Tips this Autumn

With every new season that comes forward, we welcome a reset here at Coastal Home.  We take time to clear the tables, wipe down the shelves, pull back the bedding and pillows, and make room for the new.

This Autumn, we are inspired by the colors of the season and the words of Maya Angelou, “Without change, there would be no butterflies”.

Below are just a few dining table styling tips we used to lean into the meaning (and the mood) of our tablescapes this season:

1. Start with a base.  Ask yourself?  Tablecloth, table runner, or both?

We began with a soft table runner in a deep amber color inspired by the season.

2. Add the anchor.  1-2 pieces of significant weight that will anchor the entire table

To gain this look, we brought in a large, ceramic vase, and a couple complimentary (yet functional pieces) like pinch pots and stoneware.

3. Add organic element(s).  Think wood, leathers, stone

We decided to go for a longer tablescape, and therefore added a wood table shelf that would not only add height, but also allow us to place table essentials underneath for ease in access.  Functional pieces like pepper mills, pot holders or serving boards are great additions.

4. Add Florals.  Thrill, Fill or Spill

Pending the height of your ceiling/lighting, consider floral options that Thrill (reach upward and stand tall), Fill (are more rounded and full) or a Spill (come over and down the vessel).

Our table is immediately elevated by the addition of the florals in a color inspired by the changing landscape of the season.

5. Finish with texture. Think natural textures like jute, sisal, or linen - anything but smooth

To complete the look of our coastal autumn table, we add in jute placemats, leather napkin holders, and a few willow pumpkins.

Optional:  Feeling fancy?  Dress it up:  Think metals or iron

For us, we added a touch of brushed gold in the serving tongs, embellishment of the leather napkin holders and set of candle holders

If adding metals feels too feminine, cast iron accents are a nice, rustic alternative.

Autumn is the season we begin to see the passing of the year, and embrace forthcoming changes in the landscape around us.  Maya Angelou’s quote is a metaphor reminding us that just as caterpillars must endure various levels of challenge, change, and growth, people too experience a similar lifecycle to reach their full potential.  Whatever change this new season plans to bring, we are here for it - and with refreshed tablescapes.
